***Congrats to yspelipe for FTF!*** In Durham, off Bear Rock Road; parking for 3-4 cars on the side; coordinates provided. Round trip hike less than 1.5 miles on the Orange trail. To return, retrace your steps or for a loop, continue on the Orange trail then pick up the red-blue trail, total of 1.8 miles. Please rehide as found so it’s not noticed by muggles.
While doing some cacheing up here recently, I discovered this nice preserve and was surprised there were no caches here. It is named after Howard B. Field Jr., a conservationist and longtime resident of Durham. The land consists of some nice, shaded, and well-marked woodland trails in a mixed hardwood forest, with a couple of stream crossings and a vernal pool in the middle. The preserve is 152 acres in size, so there is plenty of room for some more caches too. I placed mine in the lower end to make room for others. Keep your eye out for white-tailed deer and wild turkeys, and your ears open for the sound of a pileated woodpecker. A map kiosk will help you get oriented and shows two more trailheads, another on Bear Rock Road, and one behind Cochinaug High School. Look for the foundation of an old cabin near the entrance on Bear Rock Road. Enjoy your hike!
