Geocache Description:

This cache is placed as part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail, located within the Eastern Lake Erie Region. Earn a free Eastern Lake Erie Region geocoin. If you are interested in participating in the Geotrail, please visit Seawaytrail.com/geotrail

This cache contains a unique hole punch which must stay with the cache. Use this hole punch in space #9 on the Eastern Lake Erie Region page of your Official Great Lakes Seaway Trail Logbook. This hole punch is NOT a trade item. Log books can be picked up locally at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center at the entrance to Presque Isle.

The first stage of this 2 part multi cache will take you to the Land Lighthouse in Erie, PA. A back up stage 1 is @ N 42° 08.665 W 080° 03.707

This structure was the first lighthouse in operation on the Great Lakes. First built in 1818, it was twenty feet high. Its location on the mainland gave the advantage of additional elevation on the bank above the water level; allowing vessels to home in on the channel entrance of Presque Isle.

Near the final of this multi, walk north to the boat launch to see the Presque Isle North Pier Light.

The first light at this location was an octagnal wooden tower built in 1828 was known as the "beacon light". The current wrought iron, 30 foot tower replaced it in 1858 weighes 19 tons. This light was moved 2,000 feet east in 1880 after eastward extension of the pier. In 1940s the tower was boxed in with heavy steel and moved the the current location at the extreme east end of the north pier.
