Geocache Description:

An easy driveby cache in a delightful location.

Please replace the cache carefully to ensure it remains jammed in place particularly during winter storms!

This area of Orkney is well worth exploring with nice views out across Wind Wick Bay, the East Mainland of Orkney and as far as the island of Copinsay.

188 men perished in Wind Wick Bay when HMS Opal and HMS Narborough were lost on the rocks of Hesta just north of the bay during the snow storm of 12 January 1918. There is a nice memorial close to the cache.

Windwick Bay is now popular for diving and birdwatching.

The cache is a 35mm film canister with log and pencil.

A short distance away archaeological excavations are currently taking place. This project seeks to investigate Late Bronze Age and Iron Age landscapes. This has included the survey and excavation of several souterrains and settlements as well as a massive Iron Age roundhouse and settlement complex known as The Cairns
