Geocache Description:

Trees of Alabama Series: Chestnut - (Castanea dentata). Deciduous hardwood found sporadically in all regions of Alabama. The cache container is a large camoed pill bottle. I was surprised when I found this tree growing in the Talladega Nat. Forest. At first, I thought I had found a mature non-blighted American Chestnut Tree, but I now believe that this tree is either a Chinese Chestnut or an American-Chinese Hydrid. At one time, Chestmuts made up 20% of the trees in an eastern U.S. diciduous forest. It was said that a squirrel could travel from Georgia to Maine without touching the ground and only leaping from chestnut to chestnut tree. There is a picture of both American and Chinese Chestnut leaves on the log Sheet. Please return cache as found.
