This is one of a series of caches that has been placed along the River Ayr Walk and its connecting pathways between Sorn and Glenbuck. The caches have all been sited at significant points with the intention of introducing the cacher to the rich history and the natural beauty of this area. The River Ayr Way is Scotland’s first source to sea path network and stretches for 66km from Glenbuck to the sea at Ayr
The 'jougs'
The church of Dalgain (now Sorn Parish Church) was built in 1656 but did not have a minister until the 1690’s , when ‘the killing times’ were over. These were covenanting years when religious freedom had to be fought for. The last known covenanter to be killed was George Wood a sixteen year old youth. His grave can be seen against the east wall of the church. On the south side of the church is the gravestone of Rev. Lewis Balfour a minister of Sorn Parish Church and grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson. On the west wall hang ‘Jougs’ which were placed round the necks of those judged by the Kirk Session to be sinners. Across the road on the south side of the church is an old and picturesque example of a single track hump back bridge. Cross by car and experience one of those scary moments where the road ahead suddenly disappears from view.
Old hump back bridge
The cache is a small tub and hidden at the start point of a local walk through Sornbank Plantation.
