Astotin lake is a significant part of the wetlands of the Aspen Parkland, a transitional biome between prairie and boreal forest stretching from northeastern British Columbia through central and northwestern Alberta, central Saskatchewan to central and southern Manitoba.
Due to human expansion and development, natural aspen parkland has been significantly reduced. Protected areas such as Elk Island National Park, the Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, the Ministik Bird Sanctuary, Beaverhills Lake and Miquelon Provincial Park are now small islands of remaining parkland.
Astotin Lake provides habitat and nesting for numerous species of waterfowl and shorebirds.
The cache is accessed by parking at the Shoreline Trail just west of the golf course parking lot. You will then enjoy a one kilometer hike along a paved trail to the Beaver Bay picnic area.
The cache does not require bush bushing if accessed by moving east along the open shoreline from the bench at the northern most point of the picnic area and then moving a short distance up the bank into the grove of large spruce trees. Please ensure you practice no trace caching.
The cache has the approval of Parks Canada which is a requirement of all caches set in Canada's national parks. Please leave no trading items.

Note that Elk Island National Park is home to a variety of species of wildlife including bison and moose. These large wild animals should be given respect and space for your safety and theirs.
