This EarthCache is in Stone State Park. Please check the website for hours and availability as the roads do close in the winter.
Stone State Park is located in the Loess Hills region of Iowa. These hills run from just north of this park all along the Missouri River to the Iowa-Missouri border. They were created during the most recent glaciation period from pulverized rock pieces being picked up by the wind and deposited just west of the Missouri River valley from which they came. There are only two deposits this thick in the world, the other along the Yellow River in China.
These hills of loess soon were covered in prairie landscape which has since been encroached upon by woody vegetation species. This landscape does not look the same as it did when the Lewis & Clark expedition visited the area in the early 1800s. The coordinates of this point take you to an interpretive sign about the expedition. Please note the depth of the loess as reported in the journals and reported here. Send the answer to me in an email.
Next, proceed to N 42 33.275 W 096 28.185 (There is a short trail you can take or you may drive if necessary)
Please note the elevation change between these two points and read the information about the prairie, Iowa's native landscape since the most recent glaciation.
Enjoy the views and post a picture with your log and send the answers via email.
