Geocache Description:

A small container located near to paths running near the ponds. The path leading to the cache site are a little uneven and overgrown but access is otherwise easy. Short area of path near the cache does get muddy in wet weather.

Pennytown Ponds was once part of a large parkland known as Cotes Park as early as the 14th century. At the beginning of the 19th century the park was sold off into smaller parcels of land. Cotes Park hall once stood in the centre of the park but this disappeared with the development of the industrial estate. A reminder of its existence is the stone outbuilding at the top of the bridle path.

There was also a small hamlet here which gave the area its name, as the residence paid one silver penny as rent. During the 19th century Cotes Park was mined for coal and iron stone, as was most of the surrounding area. In 1942 Alfreton urban district council bought Pennytown ponds and started reclaiming the area for public use. Footpaths, bridges and steps were built by Italian prisoners of war.

The ponds became isolated and forgotten as the industrial estate was developed in the 1970s, However, the site was designated as a Country Wildlife site in the 1980s. Investment in the 1990s and the work of the Pennytown Ponds group has given the area a new lease of life, with the site becoming a local nature reserve in 2002.

Limited parking is available and the area is popular with fisher-muggles, dog walking muggles and muggles in general so some stealth will be required.

Cache set up with log, led torch, few trade items and trackable coin.

Please take time for a stroll around the ponds or leave the car here and make your way over to another cache, not far from here...

Please leave cache as found.
Happy hunting!
