Geocache Description:

Kalispell Rock is a mountain peak in Northeast Washington - once a fire observation point - providing beautiful vistas of the Priest Lake/River and Pend Oreille River Drainages/Valleys.

Pre-dating even lookout towers, Kalispell Rock was once used as a forest fire observation point. Remains of an old USFS log cabin still remain, and one can see for miles in all directions from atop the exposed granite rock at the peak. However, beware to anyone attempting to scale this exposed boulder atop Kalispell Rock. The last 10-15 feet should be reserved for those with the appropriate training and equipment. The overall trek is highly enjoyable and rewarding. The traditional route to Kalispell Rock on USFS 308 starts at the gated-off entrance to the old USFS road to Kalsipell Rock (N48.38.026 W117.06.093). As the crow flies, the peak is less than 2 miles from this starting point. By foot, the trek is just a tad more than 3 miles one-way, with a total climb of 1330’ in elevation. The old road will take you to the trail-head located on the southern slope at N48.37.605 W117.08.322. The trail-head is not marked very well, but once found, the trail is easily identifiable and easy to follow aside from 6-8 trees that have fallen and haven’t yet been cleared. Once on the trail, you will proceed a few hundred yards to a clearing where the trail will switch back to the east and take you directly to the summit. The trail is not well marked at this switchback point, but once you re-acquire the trail, the path is highly visible, clear of obstructions, and will take you directly to the peak. Both my 7 year-old daughter and 9 year-old son accompanied me and my wife on this round trip journey of about 3 ½ hours. Be prepared for the mosquitoes, and don’t be surprised to see Elk, Deer, a Moose, or even a Bear – We saw all 4!!!
