Geocache Description:

Willingboro Plaza

Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, The Willingboro Plaza was a happening place. When Abraham Levitt and Sons started building the bedroom community of Levittown, NJ in the late 1950s, it was an area without a downtown. The Willingboro Plaza was built on 56 acres on Route 130 North to correct this need. The outdoor plaza consisted of a courtyard, three anchor stores (Pomeroys, Sears, and Woolworths), a bowling alley, The Fox Theatre, 2 supermarkets, a Walgreens drugstore with a soda fountain, and numerous other stores. Before the malls, this was a great place to shop, meet friends, go bowling, and catch a movie. My mom even signed me up for charm school at Sears (didn’t help!). I also liked the Christmas display of wooden figures in the courtyard. In its heyday, The Plaza was also visited by John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon as they campaigned for the presidency (although not together).

Unfortunately, The Plaza fell on hard times once the indoor malls opened up and I-295 was built. The anchor stores moved to the malls and took customers with them. The smaller stores couldn’t survive and then crime moved in. The Plaza was pretty much empty for years and was a major blight on the Rt. 130 corridor. Fortunately, a massive redevelopment led to the creation of the Willingboro Town Center—more of the type of community center that Abraham Levitt visualized. It now boasts an Acme, the Willingboro Library, a Burlington County College satellite campus, Ruby Tuesdays, a Medco distribution center, townhouses, two banks and assorted stores and restaurants.

Please watch for muggles and return as found. There is some room for small trinkets.

There is a scratch off lottery ticket for the FTF!
