NOTRE DAME DE VALLEE CLAUSE

Cette chapelle fut érigée au XIVème siècle. Elle doit son nom au fait qu'elle est bordée de tous côtés par des collines boisées (du latin claustrum : enclos, enceinte).Elle était la propriété des bénédictines de la Capelle del Vern (commune d'Escandolières). En ce même lieu un ermitage aurait existé au Moyen-Age.

Plusieurs légendes courent sur ce lieu.
- Un bouvier perdit un boeuf et le trouva couché sous un coudrier dans le fourré au fond duquel reposait une statue de la vierge. Il prit son boeuf et la statue. Le lendemain, le même boeuf disparut encore, mais oh prodige, il le retrouva sous le même coudrier ainsi que la statue occupant sa première place. Le bouvier pria la Sainte Vierge et raconta son histoire, la population accourut en dévotion.

- Le 14 août 1944, la population qui avait soutenu les résistants installés dans la région pouvait craindre les représailles de l'occupant. La panique s'empara des habitants de Recoules car plusieurs maisons avaient été incendiées à Lavernhe. Le lendemain, 15 août, fête de l'Assomption de la Vierge Marie, les troupes allemandes quittaient la région. Les habitants y virent alors un signe de la Vierge Marie et déclarèrent "Miracle, Notre Dame de Vallée Clause nous a sauvé".

Aujourd'hui, ce sanctuaire est toujours un lieu de pélerinage, tous les ans au 15 août, les habitants de Recoules, de Lavernhe et des environs s'y retrouvent.

This chapel was set up in the XIVth century. She owes her name to the fact that she is lined on all sides by afforested hills (of the claustrum Latin: enclosure(pen), surrounding wall(speaker)) .Elle was the property of the Benedictines of the Capelle del Vern (municipality of Escandolières). In the same place a hermitage would have existed in the Middle Ages.

Several legends exist on this place.
- A cowherd lost an beef and found it slept under a hazel tree in the undergrowth at the bottom of which a statue of the virgin rested. He took his beef and the statue. The next day, the same still disappeared, but oh miracle, found it under the same hazel tree as well as the statue occupying its first place. The cowherd asked the Virgin Mary and told its story, the population ran up in worship.

- August 14th, 1944, population which had supported the Resistance fighters installed in the region could be afraid of the reprisals of the occupant. The panic seized inhabitants of Recoules because several houses had been burned to Lavernhe. The next day, in August 15th, feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the German troops left the region. The inhabitants transfer it then a Virgo sign Marie and declared " Miracle, Notre-Dame of Valley Clause saved us ".

Today, this sanctuary is always a place of pélerinage, every year on August 15th, the inhabitants of Recoules, Lavernhe and neighborhood meet there.
