Geocache Description:


Birds of Alabama Series: Red-cockaded Woodpecker - (Picoides borealis). In state breeder. Rare and local in all seasons in Mountain, Inland Coastal Plain, and Gulf Coast regions. Found in old growth pine forests. Listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. HIGHEST CONSERVATION CONCERN. The white bands painted on a few of the Long Leaf Piine Trees in this area mark the nesting trees of this endangered woodpecker. Please DO NOT approach the nesting trees of do anything to disturb these beautiful, but endangered birds. Each nesting hole contains a pair of mated birds.
