Geocache Description:

Gather answers to questions in Aylsham town centre and work out the coordinates for the cache which is about a mile out of town.

At the 10th anniversary of geocaching event in Sheringham Park, there was a 'guess the weight of the geocache' competition; SuffieldHunters won a well-stocked geocache with a guess of 8lb 2oz. This is that geocache.

Aylsham is a pretty market town in North Norfolk, you will see some of its highlights and can read some of its history as you answer the questions at four locations.

The coordinates are for Buttlands, the first location (Q1). Parking in Aylsham is most likely to be available at waypoint PK1 (car park entrance) near Buttlands.

The clues to the cache coordinates can be solved within a short distance of the market place. The waypoints Q1-4 take you to Buttlands (read all about it when you get there), to John Soames' pump, to the parish church of St Michael, and finally to the town sign. If you would like a little more challenge, you can make your way to the locations without using the waypoints.

To work out the final cache coordinates you need to answer the following:

At Q1. When was John of Gaunt, Lord of the Manor? 1A7B

At Q2. What is the date on John Soames' pump? 19C3

At Q3. Once you've found the memorial to HR, the Red Book Man, how old was his wife, Mary when she died? (the answer is at but not inside the church) 7D

At Q4. In what year was Aylsham Women's Institute's Golden Jubilee celebrated? 19E2

From your answers you should have worked out the values of A, B, C, D and E; you can derive F, G and H as follows:

F=(A+B)
G=(AxB)
H=(D+C)

The coordinates of the cache are: N52° 4D.BE6' E001° 1F.GH9'

A walk from the town centre to the cache location would take you through the picturesque, old part of town, over the river Bure and into the country beyond - about a mile single trip. Alternatively, there is a car park quite near by at waypoint CP2.
