Geocache Description:

You will find Alsea Falls along the South Fork of the Alsea River between the towns of Alsea and Alpine in Oregon. Alsea Falls Recreation Area is a popular stop for folks looking to beat the heat and offers hiking, camping, and fishing. You may also see sunbathers and swimmers.

WATERFALLS:
Waterfalls are formed when a river channel is narrow and deep when a river is comparatively young. Erosion occurs more slowly when a river courses over rock; compared to downstream where the erosion happens more quickly. Sediment and other materials are forced from the riverbed as the water starts to move faster over the rocks, and thus the rockbed is carved deeper and the waterfall becomes higher. Over time, a canyon or gorge may form. The rate of retreat for a waterfall can be as high as one and half meters each year.

Rivers become wider and shallower just above waterfalls as the water flows over the rock shelf. Many waterfalls have deep pools at the bottom due to the kinetic energy of the water hitting the bottom. The rock erodes gradually over time, and the waterfall collapses to be replaced by a steeply sloping riverbed.
