The Waiopehu Scenic Reserve was developed by the Levin Round Table No. 50 and the Levin Borough Council in 1976.
The land of an area of 22 1/2 acres was proclaimed a Scenic Reserve in 1913 - 1915 after previously being set apart as a Water - Work Reserve.
In earlier times this land was a refuge for the Mua-Upoko Tribe with the Koputaroa Stream providing water and abundance of Eels and Kakahi shellfish.
