Catalina Stables Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Hedge: Sure enough, like the stables here on the island, the cache is gone. Even this far off the beaten path, not much respect for shared property. Sigh.

Geocache Description:

This cache isn't at the location of the old Catalina Stables, but at one of the trail-turnarounds for the memorable rides that island-visitors used to experience on horseback. An island fixture for 60 years, the stables aren't here anymore, but the views are, and for our money, this is as grand a view as is possible without a back-country permit. The stables were never much to look at, but they were part of a rough-and-tumble rustic Catalina. The Catalina Island Company removed them in 2008 as part of an effort to reimage Avalon as a more resort-oriented destination.

The canyon at this point creates a large ear - note how you can hear boats in the harbor, golf carts (ugh - couldn't golf cart rentals have gone the way of the stables?) and people conversing from this great distance... 26 miles across the sea, and 400 feet above sea level.

In keeping with the wild nature of old Catalina and the Stables, this is a challenging little hike with rewarding panoramic views.
If you take the trolley and visit the Wrigley memorial, use this rocky dirt road as a alternative route back down the canyon instead of taking the trolley or going on the asphalt. The shortest approach is from the campgrounds, but we recommend continuing on the dirt fire road down through the canyon after making the find instead of doubling back to civilization. Just like the horses heading back to the stables to complete a ride, the fire road will empty out at the lower end of the golf course between holes 1 and 9, crossing a couple of bridges, and passing through a few microclimates that could be in the middle of Africa or Australia, and where you're almost certain to encounter quail and a deer or two.
