A cache n dash on a country road in rural Perthshire, if you dare
The Waterloo Observer recently carried a story in their popular "100 years ago" section which tells how their promising new reporter Tam McSporran had mysteriously disappeared whilst investigating some of the history of the area. Tam was an enthusiastic lad and had decided to investigate the history of the Witches Stone which can be found at N56 31.200 W003 33.478
In his notebook he had recorded that the witches stone which stands close to the road near Meikle Obney Farm was, according to legend, carried in the lap of a witch as she flew over the hills, but she dropped it and it's been there ever since.
He had searched through the archives in the Waterloo Library but had noted that he could find no record of anyone in the immediate area being known as a witch. In 1598 3 people from Dunkeld were tried as witches but were acquitted, this was the same year that 2 people in Perth were convicted (according to the Craigie Column in the Courier).
Nothing more was recorded by Tam and when he disappeared without trace all that was found was his notebooks and pens lying under a broken birch tree, and if you search hard enough you can still find them there.
