This is the 2nd in a series of caches located in South Park Darlington - more to follow! The Park can get very busy on sunny days so please be very muggle and doggle aware when looking and replacing the caches. Please bring your own pen or pencil as there is not one in this cache.
South Park has been an important green space in Darlington since the 17th century, when it was left to the people of the town by James Bellasses.
In 1851 under the influence of the first park committee; which included members of the powerful Backhouse family and George Stephenson’s brother Joseph, the park became known as South Park.
South Park has a long and varied history with many of the Victorian monuments still in the park for a new generation to enjoy.
The Terracotta fountain that you can see near this cache site was built and erected by James Pulham and Son, (a local firm of Landscape gardeners) during the early 1870's for Henry Pease as a major feature in the grounds of his mansion at Pierremont (now demolished). This house was sold piecemeal after the death of his wife in 1909 and the fountain presented to Darlington Borough Council, who moved it to South Park in 1925. The fountain was refurbished in 2005.
The duck pond contains 1.6 million gallons of water and is home to many different species of birds, like Moorhens, Coots, Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Greylags Goosanders and Mallards.
Although many people feed the ducks bread this is fround upon by the park keepers so please be aware of this if you are tempted. If you would like to feed the birds and ducks seed can be bought from the Park Cafe.
Darlington Borough Council have published the following Summer Opening times at South Park. They are:
Monday 00:01 23:59
Tuesday 00:01 23:59
Wednesday 00:01 23:59
Thursday 00:01 23:59
Friday 00:01 23:59
Saturday 00:01 23:59
Sunday 00:01 23:59
It would appear the Park is open virtually 24 hours (but I think Darlington Council might have made a mistake with the times?) The Park is best enjoyed on sunny afternoons. There are toilets and refreshments (including ice cream) available next to the Clock Tower at the newly restored Pavilion.
Enjoy the Brass Band if it is playing at the Banstand before you move on. Knotted hankies for your head at the ready!
