Alligator junipers thrive in the lower elevations of the mountains around Silver City. They usually grow in mixed stands with pinyon, pines and oaks. The are easily recognized by their deeply checkered bark resembles alligator skin. Older junipers and usually don’t get over 30 to 40 feet. This hike leads to a mammoth thick-trunked tree that towers more than 60 feet into the sky. The trail is good any time of the year. In summer it can be hot so plan to start early. In winter snow usually melts off within a few days.
