Old Bog Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

confluenceman: Logs indicate the cache has been in trouble for a year & a half. Now it's missing. If Berjr1 & LHollo can't find it, then it's gone for good. I've moved away & can't address it anymore. Actually I'm surprised it lasted this long; it was a clever, but fragile hide, hanging from the roof of a culvert under a road.

Geocache Description:

Thaddeus-Chandler Conservation Area in Duxbury is the site of old abandoned cranberry bogs.  The forest has taken over the bogs; all that remains are the dike roads and water management system; canals and bridges leading from the irrigation ponds to the west.

Cranberries are native to North America.  Native Americans used them for food & medicine.  Settlers on the Cape began cultivating the berry 200 years ago.  A cultivated bog can produce berries from the same vines for 150 years.   Commercial viability is another matter, and many bogs have been abandoned in the 20th century for economic reasons.  Once left to nature, the bog quickly succumbs to invasion by the hardier New England forest flora.
As you seek this cache, look for the flat lowland areas along the trails; try to imagine the surrounding woods as cleared bogland.
