Geocache Description:

As an Earthcache, there is no box or container to discover. With this cache you discover something about the geology of the area. In this drainage you will be able to find the gemstone Jasper. For more information consult www.earthcache.org.

Hello rockhounds. I have a great spot for you to find Jasper. You can find some stones in the creek beyond the gate. The best hunting will be in the roadbed beyond the creek and along the roadbed behind you ( N42 29.811, W122 41.631).
Jasper is one of the birthstones listed for the sun sign of Virgo. It is also the mystical birthstone for the month of October. It was a favorite gem in ancient times and was referenced in Greek, Hebrew, Assyrian and Roman Literature.
Jasper is an opaque and fine grained variety of Chalcedony, part of the quartz family. It is formed in several environments, generally near the surface of the earth. Chemical and hydrothermal forces help the formation and coloration of this sedemntary rock.
Most of what you find in this area will be a red Jasper. You may also find yellow, green and brown Jasper. Sometimes the colors are mixed in the same stone. The color depends on the original mineral content.
Jasper can be polished or tumbled. The Greeks carved it into seals. In addition to jewelry it has been used to make vases and snuffboxes.
The property on both sides of the road past the first white winter road closure sign is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. My thanks to them for permission to place this cache. At the very end of the road, up the hill from the parking area is a private ranch. You have lots of acres to explore and find Jasper in. From November through April 30 a Winter Road Closure is in effect. The gates will be closed and locked. No motorized travel is allowed off the main road during the winter. You are free to walk, ride a horse or ride a bycycle between November and the end of April.

Logging Requirements:
Email me the answers to these questions and then log your find.
1. This will require some research. What mineral gives red Jasper it's color?
2. After searching for Jasper at this site, what geologic and or man made forces exposed these gemstones to us?
3. Examine some of the Jasper you have found. Could the natives who originally occupied this area have made tools or weapons from Jasper? Explain your answer by telling me why you answered yes or no.
4. There used to be a sign here talking about erosion. I'm told its gone so this question has been modified. Tell me what human activity causes erosion.
5.(optional)Post a photo of some of the Jasper you found.
