Therefore the principal mission of the Holocaust Documentation Center and Memorial Collection Public Foundation (founded in 2002 by the Hungarian government) and the Holocaust Memorial Center is to serve this objective. The institution was awarded Nivó Prize of Architecture for restoration and rehabilitation of a historic monument in 2005. The building complex is a mix of classical and modern architecture. The building’s asymmetrical outline, the dislocated walls, and the descending stairs in the exhibition halls, all symbolize the distorted and twisted time of the Holocaust. From the inner courtyard, a flight of descending stairs underneath a leaning glass structure leads to the exhibition halls. The lecture hall, the rooms for group activities, the archive, and the library are on the ground floor, while the first floor houses the offices. An 8 meter tall wall surrounding the courtyard of the Memorial Center serves as a memento for the Hungarian victims of the Holocaust. The names of the victims are engraved onto the glass wall – a design by graphic artist Laszlo Zsoter - with a special laser technology. The eclectic styled Synagogue was designed by Lipót Baumhorn (1860-1932), the most prolific European Synagogue designer of the turn of the century. The building stands on the ground-plot Géza Belatini Braun manufacturer donated to the Jewish Community in 1909. The constructions, however, began only in 1923. Thy Synagogue built with public contributions was dedicated on January 6, 1924. The Synagogue functioned until 1944; between 1944 and 1945 it served as an internment camp. Occasional services were held again from 1945. Kosher kitchen and a senior club operated in building wings that have been demolished earlier.From 1990, the youth organizations Hasomer Hacair and Kidma operated under the women’s balcony. By then the Synagogue was already in a rather dilapidated condition.

A tervezési területet az Auschwitz Alapítvány javaslatára a Holocaust Alapítvány egyetértésével a kormányzat jelölte ki. Ez a döntés hosszú vitára tett pontot, mert megfelelo körülményeket biztosít a Dokumentációs Központ és Emlékgyujtemény elhelyezésére, egyben megoldja a Baumhorn Lipót által tervezett, pusztuló zsinagóga helyreállítását. A létesítés részét képezi a ferencvárosi városrész rehabilitációjának. 60 év mulasztása után megépült a holokauszt magyarországi áldozatainak emlékhelye. Immár van emlékhelye az áldozatoknak. Budapesten, Ferencvárosban, a Páva utcában van ez a hely, ahol a vészkorszakban internáló tábor muködött. Autentikus hely. A belsovárosi épületszövetben saroktelken álló zsinagógának a tömbbelsobe forduló, diagonális szerkesztése, mint gesztust, eleve feltételezte a belso életre, belso kertre szervezést. Ennek a gesztusnak a kivetítése az új építmények elhelyezésénél a zsinagóga átlós tengelyének tükrözése, az emlékoszlopokkal határolt, zsinagóga elotti tér centrumba helyezése. Az érkezés fotengelyében a rekonstruált zsinagóga áll. Ezt karéjozzák az emlékközpontot és a kiállítást befogadó új épületrészek. Az utca felol vizuális térhatárolást és térosztást szolgáló, kofallal határolt árkádsor épült, a külso hatások ellen védelmet, a belso kert felol az emlékfal örökkévalóságát szolgálva. Az állandó kiállítás lejárati üvegcsarnoka is megdolt oszlopokra van szerkesztve. A tektonikus szerkesztésu határoló falak mögött emlékárkád található, falán a több mint félmillió áldozat nevének helyet adó névjegyzékhellyel (jelenleg körülbelül 60 ezer név van felvésve). Szimbolikus jel a tetokert is, amely vízióként lebeg a borzalmak felett és már az élettel keresi a kapcsolatot. A kertek jelentéstartalmának sokféleségében emlékkert ez, amely mindenkinek a jobbik énjéhez szól. |
