Punk Rotten and Nasty

The railroad running next to this geocache was built between 1906 and 1911 by the Pacific Railway and Navigation Company. It connects Banks, OR and the Portland area to Tillamook, OR. With it’s completion in 1911 the Oregon coast became accessible to the interior population as well as it opened the Portland area markets to products of Tillamook and surrounding areas. In 1915 the Southern Pacific Railroad purchased the line and ran it until 1990 when the Port of Tillamook Bay took over operation. The line hauled lumber from Tillamook area mills until 2007 when a strong December storm washed out many areas of track. Because of the steep grade, sharp curves and the number of tunnels and trestles per mile of road it was considered the most rugged line still in operation right up to its end in 2007.

The railroad was nicknamed “Punk Rotten and Nasty” in its very early days because of the combined effects of steep grades, sharp curves, scary trestles and long tunnels that captured the smoke from the locomotive firebox, all making passengers queasy.

For more information and history of this railroad, consult the book: Punk Rotten and Nasty: The Saga of the Pacific Railway and Navigation Co. by Paul Clock.
