"Did you know Waco?" is a cache series that highlights some of
the people and places from Waco that have made it famous. These
will focus not on Waco history alone, but its contributions to the
rest of the world. Come along and find out what to say when someone
asks you, "What's so special about Waco?"
The tragic events that took place between the Branch Davidions
and Federal Agents at Mount Carmel Center in Waco are as infamous
an event as any in Waco, Texas, or even American history. The siege
began on February 28, 1993 with a weapons raid by the ATF that
resulted in four ATF officer fatalities and seven Branch Davidian
deaths. It ended 50 days later on April 19 with the burning of the
compound. The leader of the Branch Davidian Seventh Day Adventists,
David Koresh, died on that day along with 73 of his followers.
This cache will bring you to the corner of the property where
these events took place. Please be respectful as you search for the
cache but feel free to enter the property as the land is open to
those that want to remember the tragic events. There are several
monuments including one to honor the Branch Davidians who died, one
to remember the ATF agents killed, and one to honor those who died
in the Oklahoma City Bombing, a second tragedy born of ill-will due
to the events in Waco.
To solve this puzzle, you will need to visit three other caches
that form the "Trail of Black Suburbans".
Trail of Black Suburbans - Turn 1 (GC2CM54)
Trail of Black Suburbans - Turn 2 (GC2CM5G)
Trail of Black Suburbans - Turn 3 (GC2CM5P)
Inside each cache you will find a plastic vial with partial
coordinates to the final. Vials DO NOT OPEN. Please don't break
them trying to get in.
Inside the cache you will find plenty of trade items as well as
a laminated pamphlet explaining the events at Waco published by the
Branch Davidians. This in no way reflects the views of Groundspeak
or the cache owner and is to be enjoyed as an artifact rather than
a history lesson. Please be sure to leave it in the cache for
others to enjoy. If you want a copy for yourself, they are
availible free of charge at the New Mount Carmel Welcome
Center.
There is also a virtual cache on the property that you will want
to do. It will give you a tour of the monuments on the property but
dont forget to see the ruins of the compound directly to the left
of the visitors center where the virtual tour begins.
With events such as this most people will remember where they
were when they heard about it. Include this in your log.
