GeoHounds On The
Trail
The original cache contains a
First to Find Badge, Geocoin, Travel Bug, Keyrings, Log Book,
Pencil & Sharpener.
This walk, mainly on the Blue
Route but not all, is totally 'Geohound' friendly with no roads, no
stiles and no livestock to worry about. Plenty of squirrels and
rabbits to chase though, even the occasional deer if you're lucky.
It's the perfect off-lead experience, also ideal for all the
family. A picture in springtime with a carpet of bluebells then
butterflies in the summer followed by fungi and autumn colours.
Lower paths can however be quite muddy in winter. Regrettably not
accessible to wheelchair users.
The only slight hazard you may
encounter is the odd mountain bike as there is a down hill course
here (not on the public paths) but the bikers are generally quite
considerate to walkers and riders. The area is also used for horse
riding by permit and occasionally by organisations for orienteering
but I've only ever seen one group in all my time of walking here.
There is of course always the potential for 'Muggles' … or
should I call them fellow dog walkers… especially at
weekends and evenings but frankly they are few and far
between.
The area is extremely peaceful
and I doubt you'll hear any road noise. The only disturbance may be
the odd passing London/Uckfield train in the valley below. The only
other sound you may hear occasionally is an eerie screaming sound
like a wounded animal but fear not: it's only the squeaking of the
gantry on the distant sewage works that needs a drop of
WD40.
Although through woodland, most
of the paths are wide with little tree cover so GPS signal remains
good for the most part.
The above coordinates are for
the parking area only, which can accommodate 6 to 8
vehicles.
NOTE: There are 6 numeric clues
to find, then a bit of simple maths to obtain the coordinates for
the cache which is in a small clip-lock container inside a
camouflage bag. All the clues are located at waypoints at which a
change in direction is required. There is also one extra waypoint
purely to help keep you on the right track but with no clue
associated with it and another near the end for a convenient seat
to sit on while you do your sums.
The cache coordinates are as
follow:
N 51 03. U V
W
E 000 12. X Y
Z
Where:
U = A -
D
V = C x
D
W = G -
F
X = B +

Y = A -

Z = G - C -

Hornshurst Wood is approximately
140 acres of mostly coniferous trees but is gradually being
replanted with broad leaf deciduous trees to eventually restore it
to its original condition. It is now part of the Woodland Welcome
scheme and has been supported by the Forestry Commission with the
construction of the parking area, way-marked paths and benches, all
of which help to make it a very pleasant area to visit - caching or
not…
The owners state that they are
keen that everyone should be able to utilise and enjoy this
woodland and simply ask that consideration is given to other users
and visitors.
This cache could be easily done
in conjunction with the
Big Millhole series nearby.
We very much hope you enjoy our
first effort at hiding a cache and look forward to reading your
logs. Good Luck!
