The Old Courthouse Traditional Cache
Ken220: I offered this one for adoption over 18 months ago and no one took me up on it. This cache has been in existence over ten years and now is gone. I am no longer in the area and cannot adequately maintain it. Maybe someone else will put a cache at this site.

This is a nano cache. The purpose of it is to show you some of Chesterfield’s historical sites.
On the north side of Main Street is the 1884 County Courthouse. This building, with its imposing cupola, was built to replace the previous courthouse which was burned by Sherman's troops during the War Between The States. A monument on the grounds marks the site of the first secession meeting held in the South preceding the War.
Two structures to the east is the John Craig House, 203 E. Main Street. This home was completed in 1798 by the town's first settler, John Craig. The oldest house in town, it was used by Union General William T. Sherman as his headquarters during his stay in the Civil War. While in Chesterfield, General Sherman chose the "Craig House" (then occupied by W. E. Craig) as his headquarters. When told by one of Sherman's men that the General would like to see the lady of the house, Margaret Parke Craig replied that she "would like to speak to the gentleman." She consented that her home could be used as headquarters; but, it is reported that she informed him that she had always been a lady and she would expect to be treated like one both by Sherman and his men. Each time Mrs. Craig started to leave the house with her baby, an orderly appeared to carry the child for her! Sherman and his men put the torch to many of the buildings of Chesterfield. Chesterfield County Courthouse, the place of the first secession meeting, was burned to the ground. All of the records were destroyed. (Taken from an Essay
by Frank E. White, Jr.)
On the south side of Main Street, directly across from the Courthouse is the Old County Jail. This building was built in 1885 as a jail and as a residence for the sheriff. Its steps are made from granite salvaged from the 1825 Courthouse burned in the War Between The States.
