I enjoy industrial history, and this area around New Miami has
had its share. On one side of the cache is the great Miami River,
on the other side is a vacant field that at one time was covered
with huge coal piles. This was coal reserves for the steel mill.
you may also see railroad activity in the yard across the old coal
field. There is not much left here of what was a very active place.
This cache is not to difficult.
The United Coke and Gas Company built a number of Otto-Hoffman
type coke ovens circa 1905 for the Hamilton Otto Coke Company. The
coke plant covered about 50 acres (200,000 m2) with a battery of
120 coke ovens, thus New Miami was referred to as Coke Otto. The
property was purchased in 1937 by The American Rolling Mill Company
which changed its name to ARMCO in 1948. New Miami was incorporated
as a Village in 1929.
