Geocache Description:

This has not been a burial ground since 1899. You have permission to park here, except where indicated by the garage. THERE IS A NO DOGS ALLOWED IN THE NEW CEMETERY AND THERE ARE POSTED HOURS. NOT OPEN AFTER DUSK AND THE AREA IS POLICE PATROLLED ON A REGULAR BASIS.PERMISSION GIVEN FOR CACHE. BYOP

This was Ely's first cemetery. In 1900, the area was purchased by a private individual and it turned out that the cemetery was on his property - he demanded that the graves be removed. A memorial forest was then planted here at the old cemetery. You are in the parking lot of the old USFS Kawishiwi headquarters, which is now located east on Highway 169. The buildings have been sold to a private individual who is renting it to individuals.

WAYPOINT 1: You have found the first stage of this multi-cache. Answer the questions and move on.

To find STAGE 2, answer:
A = The cemetery was used from 1884 to 189A.
B = The last digit of the year the historical society placed this marker.

STAGE 2: ( N47 53.A90 W091 50.2B0)
When a new cemetery was needed, the city bought this property. You see to the west the original gates and the oldest stones in the cemetery- The original committee took the first plots near the gates.

To find STAGE 3, answer: The information needed is on both of the stones for the CD answers.
C = Notice where and when Matt Smuk died during WW I and the year he was buried in Ely. What it the last digit of his Company's Number? 11C.

One of the largest groups of immigrants to Ely during the early mining days were those people from the now country of Slovenia. I will teach you some Slovenian words. You will need these words to get the answer for “D”. Rojen = born male; Rojena= born female; Umrl=died male;Umrla- died female; Stara=old; Let=year.

D = From the information on Anna's stone and using the Slovenian words, CALCULATE THE YEAR ANNA WAS BORN:
186D.

Translation of the other words on her stone:

ROJENA NA GORNJI PAKI ŠT. 11 = She was born at Gornja Paka number 11. (city in Slovenia and house number)

NAJ V MIRU POCIVA = May she rest in peace

STAGE 3: ( N47 53.C76 W091 50.0D5)
