Geocache Description:

Congrats to dgwille for the FTF.

This is the first in a series of future caches based on the Freedoms Granted by the First Amendment to the US Constitution. I've long thought about such a series and over the course of the next few months will continue it with homages to the other freedoms granted by the First Amendment.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof".

It was not by accident that the Founding Fathers decided upon the freedom to worship as the first freedom granted by the Constitution. It's why the Pilgrims initially came to America and it is still the principle which draws many to this country from all over the world.

This amendment is prohibitive towards the government in that it does not allow for the establishment of a state run religion (ie the Church of England in Colonial England, or Islam in many of today's middle eastern countries). It further ensures that the government cannot prohibit individuals from practicing their chosen religion, even if that religion is no religion.

While there are many nuances to these freedoms, they are nonetheless, primary to what it means to live in America and be an American.

This "location" was established in 1856 and is the oldest of its kind in the Kansas. Its main building has some very beautiful, very old features. Take a moment to look around the outside and if you can, quietly peek inside. It's beautiful.
