Après 65 ans d'exploitation, la mine de Sancy, à
Trieux, a fermé ses portes en 1968. Une fin d'activité houleuse
marquée par la grande grève de l'automne 1963 et l'occupation du
fond de la mine durant 79 jours, contre l'annonce de 258
licenciements. Lorsque le 20 mars 1900, la concession de Sancy est
octroyée à la Société des Hauts Fourneaux de Saulnes et à Marc Raty
et Compagnie, plusieurs décennies de prospérité s'ouvrent dans ce
bassin de vie. Après trois années de fonçage et d'armage du puits
n°1 entre 1900 et 1903, l'exploitation débute pour des centaines
d'ouvriers. Un deuxième puits est même ouvert en 1906. Les deux
guerres mondiales entraînent de fortes turbulences de l'activité,
des prisonniers de guerre russes étant employés en 1916, des
Soviétiques en 1942 et des Nord-africains en 1943. Après-guerre,
l'exploitation reprend son cours normal. Un concasseur dernier cri
est même mis en service à la fin des années 50. Et pourtant, les
jours de la mine de Sancy sont déjà comptés. Les quelque 500
mineurs employés sur le site n'imaginent pas les difficultés
économiques et sociales qui se profilent à l'horizon dès le début
des années 60. L'inquiétude grandit à l'annonce de l'arrêt de
l'exploitation de certaines mines du bassin ferrifère comme celle
d'Aachen. La mine de Sancy est dans le collimateur. Le 14 octobre
1963, 258 mineurs reçoivent leur lettre de licenciement. C'est la
stupeur. Dès le lendemain, quelque 150 mineurs descendent au fond
pour une occupation au long cours afin de défendre l'ensemble de la
profession. Un véritable bras de fer s'engage avec le patronat et
le gouvernement qui ne cèdent pas d’un iota. Au fond, les
grévistes se sont organisés pour tenir un véritable siège dans les
zones les moins humides. Des équipes s’occupent de la
distribution de la nourriture et du ménage. Les mineurs dorment sur
des planches ou de la paille ; certains points d’eau leur
permettent de se laver, mais également de faire leurs besoins. Des
tournois de cartes font passer le temps. Une fanfare est créée et
un chant est composé. Il deviendra l’hymne des mineurs. Après
quinze jours d’occupation de la mine, Hubert Martin,
député-maire de Briey, interpelle même le Premier ministre à
l’assemblée nationale lors de la séance du 30 octobre 1963
pour évoquer le conflit devant la Nation tout entière. Le 6
novembre, une marche est organisée entre Moutiers et Metz en
présence de 8 000 personnes.

After 65 years of exploitation, the mine of
Sancy, to Trieux, closed its doors in 1968. The end of stormy
activity marked by the big strike of the autumn, 1963 and the
activity of the bottom of the mine for 79 days, against the
announcement of 258 redundancies.When March 20th, 1900, concession
of Sancy is granted to the Company of the Blast furnaces of Saulnes
and to Marc Raty and Company, several decades of prosperity open in
this population center. After three years of fonçage and armage of
the well n°1 between 1900 and 1903, the exploitation begins for
hundreds of workers. The second well is even opened in 1906. Both
world wars entail strong turbulences of the activity, the Russian
war prisoners being employed on 1916, Soviet citizens in 1942 and
North African in 1943. Post-war year, the exploitation is back to
normal again. A state-of-the-art crusher is even put in service at
the end of the 50s.And nevertheless, the days of the mine of Sancy
are already counted. About 500 miners employed on the site do not
imagine the economic and social difficulties which are outlined on
the horizon from the beginning the 60s. The anxiety grows to the
announcement of the stop of the exploitation of certain mines of
the pond ferriferous as that of Aachen. The mine of Sancy is in
sights.On October 14th, 1963, 258 miners receive their letter of
termination. It is the bewilderment. From the next day, about 150
miners come down at the bottom for a long-term occupation to forbid
the profession. A real arm-wrestling makes a commitment with the
employers and the government which do not give in of an iota. At
the bottom, the strikers got organized to hold a real seat in the
least wet zones. Teams take care of the distribution of the food
and of the household. The miners sleep on boards or of the straw;
certain water sources allow them to wash themselves, but also to
make their needs. Tournaments of cards make spend time. A brass
band is created and a singing consists. It will become the hymn of
the miners. After fortnight of occupation of the mine, Hubert
Martin, deputy and mayor of Briey, calls even to the Prime Minister
in the National Assembly during the session of October 30th, 1963
to evoke the conflict in front of the quite whole Nation. On
November 6th, a walking is organized between Moutiers and Metz in
the presence of 8 000 persons.
