New York Capital Region Geocachers

There are, at the time, of publication over 30 caches within 4 miles from the pavilion (including more than a dozen that have been published since we last came to this park back in 2006). Stretch out to 12 miles and you have over 100 caches to choose from.

There are also at least 10 new caches to be published for this event.

Of course, hanging out at the pavilion on the day of the event might be so much fun that you'll just have to leave all of those caches alone. Well, there's a solution for that: while this year the event will only be for the Saturday (instead of our normal 2-day extravaganza): camp overnight at the park, at a nearby park, or even take in a Bed and Breakfast. Then you can get your caching fix in on Friday and Sunday.

Psst: the pavilion! See what I mean?! pavilion photo
In fact, if you'd like more information about North South Lake Park, you can visit the state's website for it. (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24487.html). As you can see from the photo, kayaks and canoes are welcome too!

Official timeline:

  • 9am – Registration officially opens up.
  • 11:30am-1pm – potluck and BBQ lunch
(please check out our potluck wishlist below and volunteer to bring something - and please post what you'll be bringing so that we don't all have the same thing).
  • 4pm – Group photo!!
  • 4:10pm+ – Event contest winners awarded.

Speaking of event contests, we are hoping to have the usual games:

  • Get-to-know-you Bingo
  • Closest to the Pin
  • Poker Run
  • Find the Evil Micro
  • Caption the Photos*
and introducing...
  • Guess the Azimuth
(*Note: tenebrus has been the perennial victim of these oft-embarrassing photos and kindly requests that some other geocachers get out there, do some embarrassing stuff already, and get themselves unwittingly photographed, just so he's not all alone up there.)

As always, we are open to donations for prizes and volunteering for the event. Please contact the cache owners with such offers so that we can update the cache page with appropriate kudos.

Some F*AQs (*okay, some AQs aren't all that frequent):

  • Where's my 3G/4G coverage? Around here somewhere, but not everywhere, and sorry but we don't have coordinates for it as it comes and goes.
  • I have a pet iguana - can I bring him? All pet questions are being referred to the state park page (see above)
  • I have firewood from my backyard - can I bring it? Again, see the state park page as they have regulations for that (which might even change between now and the event).
  • I have charcoal from my backyard - can I bring it? Actually, we asked: charcoal is not regulated. Who knew?
  • Will there be temporary caches? Of course!
  • I've heard that the Kaaterskill Falls area is really dangerous - is that really true? Yes. There's been 3 separate plummeting deaths this year so far. If you choose to hike over to there, you are on your own, in accordance with the Courts of Claims 1964 ruling that stated "danger [there] was open and obvious to anyone employing the reasonable use of their senses." (Thanks, Lilitchpin, for reminding me to post this warning. Thanks, GPS Guy, for this very useful information.)
  • Can I log each and every temp cache that I find? Actually, the fine print says that you "attended" the "event", which you can really only do once whether there are temporary caches or not.
  • What is the half-life of caffeine? In the average healthy person, 4.9 hours.
  • Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? It doesn't matter who's the fairest – as long as you play fair, you're a winner.

A final thought: In these hard economic times, we should be thankful to have our State Parks (we almost didn't have them this year).
