Dernière grande mine de fer à puits de Lorraine,
elle etait équipée d'un puits à skip ultra moderne. Caractéristique
fondamentale et nouvelle en France, elle etait entièrement
"trackless", c'est à dire sans voie ferrée au fond. Le minerai
chargé par des chargeuses transporteuses était amené au puits par
système de bandes transporteuses (convoyeurs). Le minerai passait
dans un concasseur primaire au fond, puis était remonté au jour et
expedié jusqu'en 1972 aux unités sidérugiques. Le premier skip de
minerai chargé a été extrait le 8 aôut 1961. En 1972 changement de
statut juridique. Dans le cadre d'une redistribution des
concessions minières entre les sociétés d'exploitation, la
sociétéDE WENDEL cédait à ARBED la totalitéde ses parts. Elle
endossait son 2ème patronyme de "Mine Ferdinant", la totalité de la
production était alors expédiée au Luxembourg (et jusqu'en 1982 une
petite partie en Sarre). Le 19 janvier 1973 il était décidé de
fermer la mine voisine de Bure et de transférer son exploitation à
ARBED au cours du 2ème semestrer de 1973. La mine Ferdinant
reprenait 40 ouvriers et 5 agents de maîtrise du site de Bure. Fin
1981 un conflit entre la direction et la SNCF sur le coût du
transport de minerai, conduisait ARBED à cesser immédiatemment
toutes expéditions par chemin de fer, et à engager les
investissements spécifiques pour doter la mine de son propre moyen
de transport par le fond vers les usines mères du Luxembourg sur
10.7 km de parcours par rame de 12 wagons de 25 tonnes. Ces travaux
ont duré 12 mois. L'arrêt des installations par le jour avait
entrainé l'abandon de plusieurs installations: les 2 concasseurs
situés au bas du puits, l'emploi des skips pour l'extraction du
minerai, ceux ci étant conservés pour le transfert du personnel au
fonds, les accumulateurs du jour avec leurs installations de triage
et de criblage, l'embranchement ferrovière SNCF. Extension du champ
de production vers le sud, par acquisition des concessions "Hermann
et Elisabeth" appartenant en partie à LORMINES, situées au sud de
Ferdinant sous le territoire des communes de Boulange et Fontoy et
voisines des mines d'Anderny et d'Hayange. Le 25 février 1987 il
était décidé de lancer des travaux miniers prépartoires d'envergure
vers ces concessions et le 30 octobre 1988 la première unité de
production "U55" était démarrée. Ces concessions devaient prolonger
la mine Ferdinant de 15 -20 ans, dont la fin était prévue faute de
gisement vers 1994. Entre 1985 et 1987 elle avait accueillie une
partie des 60 mineurs de Lormines dont l'emploi avait été supprimé.
Le 1° janvier 1989, les mines Montrouge d'Audun le tiche et
Ferdinant de la division des Mines Françaises de l'ARBED ne
constituaient qu'un seul et unique établissement dénommé "Mines des
Terres rouges", 3ème patronyme qu'elle conservera jusqu'à sa
fermeture définitive le 1° décembre 2005, la dernière des mines
lorraines et de la France. L'exploitation de la mine des Terres
Rouges et en particulier des concessions situées au sud de son site
de production de Tressange était conditionnée par l'obligation
d'assurer l'exhaure de l'ensemble du "sous bassin Nord". Restée
seule en activité dans ce bassin à partir de mars 1987, elle devait
assurer le contrôle et la gestion de 13 salles composées de 42
pompes d'un débit total de 578,05 m3/mn. Mètres cubesd'eau sortis
au jour en moyenne par année 60.500.000 m3 soit 115 m3/mn ce qui
représente 16 tonnes d'eau pour 1 tonne de minerai extraite.
Virtuellement "décédée" le 31 juillet 1997 avec l'arrêt de son
exploitation, la mine des Terres Rouges s'employa au démantèlement
des installations du fond, à la maintenance des installations de
pompage, et à l'extraction des eaux d'exhaure, mobilisant encore 55
mineurs (dont 4 agents de maîtrise), jusqu'à l'arrêt définitif des
travaux (abandon de concessions). Sous la pression des populations
regroupées en associations, et de leurs élus, et lié au rapport
d'une expertise internationale diligentée par les pouvoirs publics
les arrêtés pris par le Préfet de Lorraine obligeront par 2 fois
ARBED à prolonger le pompage des eaux d'exhaure du bassin Nord, ce
qui conduira a reporté sa fermeture définitive avec arrêt du
pompage au 30 novembre 2005, l'ennoyage source de bien des
inquiétudes débuta alors. Le 4 mai 2006, les galeries sous
Tressange et Ludelange seront ennoyées, le 30 décembre 2006celles
de Bure. Le 10 mars 2008 les eaux sortirent à la galerie de
Knutange vers la Fensch. Le personnel : à l'origine et à quelques
exceptions près provenait en majeure partie de la mine Montrouge
et, en part plus faible des mines Kraemer, Burbach, Heydt et de
l'usine d'Audun le Tiche. 143 ouvriers à l'origine, ils étaient
déjà 244 au 1° mai 1966. Cités : 67 logements furent construits à
proximité du puits pour loger une partie du personnel, soit 40
logements ouvriers, 24 logements ETAM et 3 logements cadres
supérieurs. En février 2006 débutait une opération spectaculaire
destinée à supprimer du paysage Tressangeois, la tour d'extraction
symbole de l'histoire de cette mine. Les accumulateurs à minerai
subirent le même sort. Seuls subsistent le bâtiment des
bureaux-bains douches surmonté d'un vaste atelier, l'ensemble a
trouvé repreneur récemment. Le puits a été repris par Fensch
Moselle pour une exploitation future des eaux d'ennoyage. Pour
l'instant il est équipé d'un système de messure piezométrique.

Last big iron mine with well of Lorraine, it was
