Geocache Description:

Way-hey, and up she rises,
Way-hey, and up she rises,
Way-hey, and up she rises, earl-eye in the mornin'!

The Whaleback. No trail. No whining. C'mon Ahab, slay this monster.

The Whaleback is a monster of a volcano northeast of Mount Shasta, and a Moby Dick of obsession. So many years, and now it has seen my footprints. Will it see yours? There is no easy way up, but the summit register records the log of an 84 year old gentleman in July of 2010. Come join the fun.

An easy drive beyond the Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park leads to forest road 42N24 at N41 33.024 W122 06.306 . We encountered a surprising amount of traffic on this dirt track, only to discover a hang gliding launch on the slopes of our mountain. We parked at the high point of the road on the north slope, ( N41 32.307 W122 08.761) and I started climbing. And climbing. No cliffs, no vertigo, but a bit of a steep scramble led me to the heartbreak ridge to see the true summit over there. I followed the curve of the crater with its breathtaking views, logged the summit register, then plunged down to hide the ammo can.

You will find the cache in the blow hole of The Whaleback, a harpoon nearby to mark the spot. Winter caching will be impractical, so catch this one before the snow flies. FTF pin and everlasting glory await.
