Geocache Description:

Welcome to Ronald Hyche Band Field. Please pay very close attention to not be observed by muggles.

This is the Ronald Hyche Marching Band Field. The home of the Handley High School Marching Band. This is where my brothers and I have spent almost every summer since 5th grade. It is always hot, that is hot spelled HOT!!! At one time this was a lake and was filled in to make a field for the band to practice. Imagine being in this park looking out across the lake. The field was named in honor of Ronald Hyche of Roanoke. He was the longest term band director in the history of the county and had the most award winning bands of all times in the area. Never, since he left, has anyone accomplished what he did. You will also notice a stone building that began life as a Pool House. The remnants of the swimming pool are still evident today. The lower end was cut off to make room for the tennis courts. The pool was filled in back in the early 70's due to problems with participants that were not as well behaved as others coming into the pool. The city closed it to avoid liability. The Pool house then became the Handley High Football locker room for many years until the Recreation Center was built. It was renovated again and became the Boy Scout Hut and the original boy scout hut next to it was torn down. Later it was renovated again as the nutrition center and shared by the boy scouts. Eventually the elderly could not handle sharing and with their political power pushed out the scouts. Many times they have been asked to share the facility but they claim it is THEIR property and no one can use it. So that shows that certain segments of any community can control things through politics, even in a small town. A lot of work and sweat has went into the surrounding fields and facilities and it has seen a lot of history and memories. Please enjoy the park and all that is around. Take in a game or two. The Handley Tigers are wonderful to watch if you like football. Please remember this is a high muggle area. Once you find the cache, remove it from its hiding place and walk away as inconspicuous as possible. Complete the log, do some swaps if you desire and return it exactly as found.. Thanks.
