Geocache Description:

The Pyree Literary Institute.

Originally established in 1894, this landmark is known locally as "The Red Shed" and is still well used by the community.

Way back in Glasgow, in 1799, education was finally made available to everyone, not just the wealthy. The Literary and Mechanics Institutes became the centres for learning, public debate, entertainment, libraries and cultural activities. The same movement became foundational throughout Australian towns and villages,

The Pyree Literary Institute was established in 1894, with a loan provided to 5 individuals who were "people of strong discipline, strict morals and a determination to improve themselves and the lot of their familes and the community" and continued to offer the same services to the Pyree community.

It should be noted that most evening functions were held on Full Moon nights, as the dirt track was nigh impassable by horse and cart in the dark!

The lovely tree (brush box?) you see here is a Memorial Tree, planted on Empire Day, 24th May 1922, in memory of local fallen soldiers in the 1914-18 war.

There were other Memorial Trees planted throughout the Region, one being at GC2CV8H
