The Awakaponga Wildlife Management Reserve is next to State Highway
2 & adjacent to the Tarawera River.
There has been major restoration over the last few years of this
wetland by the local community, Eastern Fish & Game &
Environment Bay of Plenty. It's now starting to resemble what the
Rangitaiki Plains looked like before development into farmland.
As the sign says,
"Hunters use the reserve during the waterfowl season
May-June. Other recreational users are advised not to use the
reserve at this time."
Use common sense if thinking of going for this cache during
hunting season. If there are vehicles in the carpark assume there
are hunters present. Morning & evening assume there are hunters
present. If its clear & sunny around the middle of the day
there may be a window of opportunity.
