The country park at Monikie, like Crombie further along the road was once part of the reservoir system supplying water to Dundee. Work began on the reservoirs here in 1845 due to the current inadequate and often contaminated water supply(mostly using pump wells and water carts) unable to keep up with the rapidly increasing population of the city who came to Dundee to work in industries such as the jute mills.
Hundreds of Irish labourers were employed in the huge task of building the reservoirs by hand and raising the embankments. The embankments created the ponds and they were lined with clay to retain water. The clay was “puddled” which meant that the labourers and their cattle pounded the clay with their feet. The embankments were then strengthened using locally quarried stone. Along with the underground piping, aquaducts etc it took 20 years to complete the job.
The 500 million gallon reservoirs supplied Dundee with 3 million gallons per day for over 100 years.
By the 1970s the much larger reservoirs at Lintrathen and Backwater were supplying Dundee and the Monikie reservoirs became redundant, being taken out of commission in 1979.
In 1981 Monikie Country Park was opened to the public.
Monikie has become popular with picnickers during Victorian times although access was restricted to the Old Park which is where this cache is set. There are a couple of "squishy" trees at the top end of the old park not far from where the cache is hidden. The Old Park also houses the playpark and has picnic tables and plenty of space for ballgames.
Thanks to Angus Ranger Service for permission to set these caches in their park
