This small cache is placed in a not-so-well-known garden tucked away just off Sakhi Vihar Road on the Banks of the Powai Lake, Mumbai. Situated between L&T (Larsen & Tubro) and the turn off to the Renaissance Hotel ,The park goes by the name Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Garden Powai. The park itself is nothing much to go by, and apart from wild trees and unkempt trails the park doesn’t seem that big until you turn off the main paths and go looking for this cache.
To locate this cache you will need to hike or rather do a brisk walk along a forest trail at a slight incline for roughly 10-15 minutes, but just ahead of the cache’s hiding place is a stunning view of the Hiranandani Park skyline across the picturesque Powai Lake making this trip worth your while.
There are muggles aplenty in the main park, (Sunday afternoon seemed quiet) however when you turn off the main trail to hunt for the cache, there aren’t any to be seen except for the odd muggle couple snogging in the bushes somewhere. I’m hoping they remain too preoccupied with one another to accidentally discover the cache.
The cache itself is a tiny Tupperware plastic container and holds A tiny log sheet, a pencil stub and a geocaching.com logo round magnet for the First to find it. Please log your find and replace the magnet button with something for the next cacher. All readings were taken with a GPS accuracy of 10m, as it was very cloudy and heavy tree cover, so I have been especially descriptive with my clues.
To get to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Garden, go along Sakhi Vihar Road, Powai, just past the L&T gates and just before the turn-off to the Renaissance Hotel & Convention Center, the Garden lies to your right if you turned in from L&T or to your left if you approached from Arrey Colony. There are three gates so enter from the main gate which is the middle one and not the gate opposite the L&T gate.
Here you will arrive at your first Way Point WP1: the Parking Lot N019 07.808 E 072 53.918 There is ample parking for cars as well as bikes, and strangely enough there was no entry or parking fee.
Once parked head along the main park road towards the lake to WP2 N019 07.778 E072 53.918 where you will see a green gate in front of you, and the lake waters are visible to your left. Here is the tricky bit. To your right facing the green gate (roughly 4-5 meters from the gate) is a distinct foot trail leading upwards into the dense growth heading roughly southward. Take this trail, and very quickly you will come across a fork WP3 N19 07.762 E72 53.911 take the high road i.e. the trail to the left. And head south for roughly 10 minutes along the trail walking briskly towards the final cache co-ordinates. The midway point is a lamppost with no light at WP4 N19 07.718 E072 53.893. Keep following this trail and You will come across two red huge cylindrical water tanks to your left (it looks like one but trust me there are two)…Start your search here.
The cache is between the trail and the water tanks if you follow this advice then you're "piping" hot; Watch out for the thorny cactus like plants. Look low and it isn’t that difficult to spot.
BONUS: Once you’ve found the cache, don’t stop here, keep following the trail south to the scenic spot WP4 N019 07.644 E072 53.877 and you won’t regret it!
NOTE: The trail is very dense and slippery during the monsoons, with stones covered in moss, and also thorny plants so wear proper shoes. Also the mosquitoes and bugs can be annoying, so a good insect repellant is a must. There is the possibility of snakes inhabiting this trail, so tread carefully. Oh and don’t disturb the smooching couples!
