Sabre's Ghost Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TeamBulldawg: Sorry to take this one down due to the amount of local military history. But the cache is located where a lot of transients pass and we have always had a problem keeping it going. There was also another cache previous to ours that kept having problems too. To costly to keep going.

Geocache Description:

Nice little park to sit and reflect. Coords will get you close and use the description/hint to get to the prize.

The original F-86L Sabre was moved to Moody AFB as there were more aircraft there in a small airpark and this particular jet had some history to it. However, we can't understand how civilian personnel will get access to see the aircraft anymore. So we changed the name of this to Sabre's Ghost. Nothing left of the park other than a small memorial to Valdosta Native Major Lyn McIntosh, USAF, who lost his life during the ill-fated mission of April 25, 1980, to rescue Americans held hostage after Iranians seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

While the F-86L has been an important reminder to the Valdosta community of the significant contributions from Moody Air Force Base over the years, it has also served as a memorial to Valdosta native Major Lyn McIntosh.

Several benches in which to sit. Prize is located where you can reflect on the many heroes who were involved in this operation. Pause and rest on the left side while you reflect.

The original cache description is listed below:

(((((A bit of military history in a local park. This aircraft was assigned to Moody AFB from September 1957 to November 1960. It was a conversion of an F-86D to the L configuration and was accomplished at Sacremento Air Material Area in a program titled "Project Follow-On." However, more modern interceptors introduced to the inventory led to the decline for the need of the F-86L.

While here, please read all of the plaques and markers surrounding this display. Place back as found and stealth is required.

Note: Park in the small parking area and as you are walking up to the park, the cache is on the left hand side. You'll cross an old railroad crosstie and then just a few yards into the treeline.)))))

Way to go Jest91 on FTF!!!
