This is the 15th Geocache from Team Family Affair and is located South West of Pactola Lake. It is about a 1.5 mile hike if you park at the gate and walk up the road (located at N 44° 02.588 W 103° 31.140). If the gate is open then drive up the winding road. Hiking or driving- just follow the road until you reach the History and Information Seth Bullock sign (at N44° 02.571 W 103° 31.620) where you will find a short trail to the top. At the cache is a spectacular view of Pactola Lake and the surrounding area. The view includes Rapid City to the East, Ellsworth Air Force Base to the North East, and Harney peak to the South so bring your camera and binoculars as it is worth the hike to this truly a great view. During the summer months you can visit with the ranger in the lookout tower.
History and Information about the area:
The trail from the Seth Bullock sign will lead you to the top of the hill and to the current Seth Bullock Fire Lookout Tower. Near the cache you will find the base of the two previous Fire Lookout towers dating back to the 1930s and the 1950s.
How to get there:
From the Dam at Pactola Lake (Highway 385) you can look accross the lake and see the lookout tower in the distance. Drive to the south end of the lake and turn onto Custer Gulch Road at (N44° 04.047 W103° 29.008). Stay on Custer Gulch Road until you come to a Y (N44° 02.550 W103° 30.018) and take a hard right onto CR251. Stay on this road and the next right will be the gate that you will want to park at (unless it is open in which case drive on up).
The cache is an ammo can painted and camouflaged to look like a rock, with Geocaching.com stenciled on the side. This is a area is popular with all kinds of hikers so after you sign the log please make sure you leave the cache WELL HIDDEN!
