Geocache Description:

A short and simple history quiz for Castro Valley.

Castro Valley is one of the most populous unincorporated areas in the United States. It's rank as of the 2000 census in this category = A in California and = B in the US.

The number of postal zip codes in Castro Valley = C.

Don Guillermo Castro was born in California, then a Mexican possession in 1810. In the San Lorenzo Land Grant, he acquired the land including those areas we now identify has Hayward, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, as well as Cull, Crow and Palomares canyons. The sprawling grant encompassed about 41 square miles. Unfortunately Castro had a gambling habit and had to sell off portions of his land to pay gambling debts. The last of his holdings was sold in a sheriff's sale in DEFG to Faxon Atherton for $400,000.

Castro Village Shopping Center was completed in 19HJ.

In 1951 construction started on Eden Hospital (you can see it's seismically safer replacement under construction now in 2010). The original Eden Hospital took K years to build and opened on November LM, 195N .
