This one is for PW.
‘P’retty ‘W’oman is Stacye, a friend of mine who helped me get over a speed bump in my life. PW was full of energy, love for others and was so kind to our furry friends of the world. We met at the animal shelter naturally and watching her find a home for our little buddies was awesome. PW would pick out one each time we did our volunteer time and insist we find a family for that pet that day. And no excuse. That was PW. Once she said something, it was a done deal.
Her passion for life was unyielding. PW knew I was hurting and the answer was to get me out and take in life. I could have just rolled up into a ball and let life go on. See, my wife Carol had just passed away after battling lung cancer. But PW kept after me finding out the interests that I enjoyed. Fishing, swimming, exploring South Carolina( my new home), games, poker, school, cigar smoking and so many others.
She called me one day and said, ”OMG, I can take smoking a cigar off my bucket list!” PW was even getting good at Texas Holdem. I took an OLLI course for disk golf and guess who showed up at class. I told her she had to register and pay for the course and as I was getting ready to do that for her, she whispered, “shhhhhhh, this is how we do things here.” We played a few holes and laughed all the way to our cars.
PW picked up a passion for caching as I mentioned one day that I was going out with my Garmin GPS. She listened as I told her what it was all about, then she said, “Let’s go.” Then every so often she would want to cache and finally wanted to create ‘Froggy’ her 1st cache. There was a problem with Froggy as there was another cache close by but after careful review with geography, it got published. Remember PW’s way of doing something. Once said, she got it done.
This cache is born from another PW’s creation. PW wanted ‘Dark & Gloomy’ to be located by the RR bridge on the Cleveland Pike as that spot seemed to have a special meaning to her. However safety was an issue with parking and too close to the railroad tracks. I adjusted this by going west to River Road along the Tugaloo River and finding a site close to another railroad bridge. More space and safely away from east, west rail traffic.
This is a very scenic area and there is even another cache further down on the Georgia side by Prather Bridge. Stone abutments still grace the river of the original covered bridge.
PW had shown me a painting of the bridge once and I always found a way of teasing her of her southern pronunciation. Of course I found other ways of saying Prather, Oconee, Tugaloo, Sandifer and other words. Her laughter was always a joy but her love of Westminster, Clemson U, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, and her family was always genuine. That was so refreshing and what makes PW so endearing.
So to someone who has become an important part of me, “ This one is for PW “
