Geocache Description:

Since I have always been interested in railroads, I’ve decided to start a series of caches highlighting some of the physical features that still remain of railroads that no longer exist in the central KY area.

The Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad ran between Frankfort, KY and Paris, KY. Although incorporated in 1871 as the Paris, Georgetown, and Frankfort Railroad, construction did not begin until 1888. The name of the railroad had been changed to the Kentucky Midland by then and the line was completed in 1890. As with many railroads built during this time in KY, convict labor was used for the bulk of the work.

Due to the many distilleries along the route, the railroad was nicknamed ‘The Whiskey Route’. Another nickname was ‘Forty Miles and Forty Bridges’ due to the numerous water crossings between the towns. Prohibition virtually forced the railroad to stop operations and the increased use of cars and trucks to transport people and goods finally caused the railroad to abandon the Paris-Georgetown line in 1967. It was abandoned from Georgetown to Elsinore in 1970. Finally, in 1987, all operations ceased in the Frankfort area.

This one is on the east end of the line near Paris. I guess the ties were too bad to salvage because they are all still in place. Bumped up the difficulty because of the small container in a wooded area, but the hint will be a spoiler. Industrial area, daytime caching probably best May be accessible from highway, but there's a better place to park if you look for it.

I'm trying a different cache container for this one, a pill holder that you carry in your pocket. It's camo'd with black duct tape, I guess time will tell if it is durable and waterproof. If not, I'll replace it with a matchstick holder. There is room for a geocoin or two. Log only, bring your own pen.
