Geocache Description:

Trail Peak is near Horseshoe Meadow in the eastern Sierras. Closest town is Lone Pine, CA. About 3 mile hike from Horseshoe Meadows campground (10,000 ft elev, fee $6/campsite overnite, no fee for day use). Cache will be easy to find. Getting to the location is difficult, which is at about 11,500 feet elevation.

Placed Friday 6 August 2010 with able assistance from great friend and hiking companion, Don.

One of our favorite short hikes in the Horseshoe Meadows area. Hike is about 6 miles round trip from Horseshoe Meadow campground. There could be several ways to approach this cache, but our route was the trail from the campground to Trail Pass (2 miles, 500 ft elevation gain) and from there a short distance north on the Pacific Crest Trail and then cross-country to the summit (1 mile and 1,000 ft elevation gain).

The cache is about 200 feet east of the summit and 100 feet lower, hidden in a space between two boulders and covered with a dinner plate size rock. The cache should be easy to find once your GPSr gets you to the location. The tough part is the climb from Trail Pass to the location – very steep and many boulders and fallen trees once you leave the Pacific Crest Trail near Trail Pass. Be careful. Cache initial contents are a log, a geocoin and three small tools. BYOP(en).

Use the several pictures to guide you and don’t forget to sign the summit log at the top and record the benchmark – 11,622 feet.
