The pond is also known as granny known as Benten pond, fresh water all year round without get hoarse, and there is no constant change in its water.
In the legend, Shodo Shonin acted as founding of the Nikko.
His grandmother lived in this place.
When Shodo Shonin is born, it is said that the Sacred water here was used as a newborn baby's first bath.
It is said that the place name of Ubagai comes from this.
この姥が池は通称弁天池とも呼ばれ、清水が年中かれることなく、またその水量も一定して増減がない。この清水は、室の八州をかたどった堀筋によって流出し、貴重な灌漑用水として利用されてきた。そのため、古くから尊崇の聖地とされ、祖母井神社もこの地より遷宮されたものであって、「下宮姥が池霊地」となっている。
また、伝承によれば、日光開山の名僧勝道上人の姥がこの地に往し、上人誕生の際の産湯にこの霊水が使用されたと語り継がれており、祖母井の地名もこれに由来すると言われている。
後代 昭和八年、大衆文学の先駆者の一人でもある硯友社同人江見水蔭が、近くに居を構えて悠々自適の生活を送っていた学友の平石姥泉を尋ねたが、そのときこの地で詠んだのが敷地内に建つ碑の句である。
