The Seaway Trail crosses the Oswego Canal in Oswego, New York. You can find the history of this New York State Canal celebrated at the Bridge House Museum in Phoenix, N.Y. Located at the beginning of the canal, the museum is accessible by boat at Lock 01 or by car at Henley Park on Lock and State Streets.

The Bridge House was built in 1917 as the Oswego Canal was being constructed. It contains the original controls that were used to raise and lower a nearby drawbridge, which has since been removed. You can also see local displays about the history of the village as well as a model of the 256-foot canal barge, Day Peckinpaugh – the last commercial vessel to traverse the canal.

The museum is located in Henley Park where you’ll find a pavilion, picnic tables, park benches and bathrooms. The museum and park are maintained by The Bridge House Brats, a not-for-profit organization of volunteer youth. In June, July and August, the Bridge House opens at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday. It closes at 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.

Begin your search near the end of the dock.
