Lefferts Lakeside Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ericles: Somewhere over the summer the township pruned all of the weeds and even the small holly trees from the far side of the fence. Presumably they took the cache as well. Since not a soul thought this was worthy of a favorite point it must now be archived. By the end of next summer the weeds will be sufficiently thick to support a real sized cache placement again. When the inevitable micro is placed here I'll wait for it to be archived before putting a SCUBA cache in the lake. :bad: [:o)]#2861.

Geocache Description:

A small cache nestled alongside a beautiful public lake

The Location: Matawan's Lake Lefferts, named after real estate developer Jacob Lefferts, was created in 1928 by damming Matawan Creek. Mr. Lefferts, who built several thousand homes in the area, was an avid gardener and planned developments that retained existing trees and placed houses on winding streets, a departure from the traditional grid patterns. The lake spans a total of 65 acres and has always been designated for recreational use. The earth-embankment dam is about 16 feet deep and 480 feet wide, with a concrete arch dam spillway tied to a concrete bridge and abutments spanning approximately 24 feet. Ravine Drive runs across the top. The upstream side is supported by a timber bulkhead and the downstream side by a pile-supported timber retaining wall. The dam has been overflowed several times in it's 80 year history. If it was ever to fail the flood waters would cover approximately six square miles downstream. The small park that runs along the East side of the park includes a boat launch, two fishing or landing docks and weekend canoe/boat/kayak rentals. Boats can be rented for $10/hour from May through September. On July 4th the lake hosts Matawan's fireworks display. On the water itself you'll have a great view of egrets, migratory ducks & geese. In the summer the lily-pads sprout white - and occasionally rare pink flowers.

The Hide: You are hunting a small lock-n-lock hidden in a standard geo-nook. There is some poison ivy nearby but not within 10 feet of the cache. No need to climb the fence or trees. Park hours vary seasonally but should be treated as dawn to dusk. Bring your boat to enjoy the tranquil waters of Lake Lefferts after making the find!
