You will find no windmills to tilt at here in the Valley of the Giants, just some splendid examples of West Coast old growth forest. (Click on the Related Web Page link for a map of the park, or pick one up when you arrive)
The legacy that is the Lighthouse Park we enjoy today began in 1874 when Point Atkinson became home to one of Canada's first manned lightstations. The original lighthouse building was upgraded in 1912, and it is this structure we see preserved in the park today as a National Historic Site. The forest area surrounding the point was protected from the extensive logging activity that dominated the North Shore's early development, in order to maintain a “dark background” against which the light's beacon would stand out for maritime traffic.
The Valley of the Giants is an enthralling trek where you can see many magnificent examples of first-growth Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, and Western Red Cedar, some possibly as old as 500 years.
There are a couple of ways to get to the Valley of the Giants. You can either head west from the parking lot on the Salal Loop and branch off on the Arbutus trail, or you can follow the Valley Trail and take the westward fork onto Arbutus Trail.
