Rooihoogte: The
Maze
The
cache is hidden in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve (entry fee:
R75 or use Wild Card) along the route from the Olifantsbos Road to
Rooihoogte Summit cache (GC1WHH9) near the start of The Maze, one
of two notable and named weathered rock formations in this area.
The other, Dragon Rocks, is a little further up the
trail.
I was prompted to place a cache here
as a) it is an interesting area and b) I had a cache with me which
I had carried to the summit expecting to use it to replace the
cache there which I thought may have been muggled according to a
recent log. Fortunately it was still secure in its location so
rather than return home with the replacement, I decided to place it
in these rocks and geo-enhance this most enjoyable shortish and
easily accessible route.
These two caches may easily be
combined with the nearby MnCo cache Rooihoogte Adjacent (GC2BK3E).
For convenience and if two cars are available, you can leave one at
the starting point for this cache and the other at the Smitswinkel
South car parking area @ S34° 16.020 E018°
27.845.
To reach the
cache:
Park along the Olifantsbos Road (the
first road to the right after entering the Reserve) @
S34° 15.853 E18°
26.095 and proceed along the clear trail heading
east up to the cache area.
The cache, a small cylindrical tablet
pot, is hidden just off the trail on a small ledge up in the
rocks.
Note:
from the parking spot/trailhead the
trail proceeds in the opposite direction across the road to
Sirkelsvlei linking through to the Olifantsbos parking area with
three other caches en route – again judicious positioning of
cars would be very useful for this walk!
