Geocache Description:

Easy cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

The ss Albatross was a 74 ton screw steamer that had arrived in Table Bay around 1859. She was the first steam tug to be employed in the Cape and towed ships as well as serving as the Robben Island packet for deliveries. She had a crew of 7.

On the 10 April 1863 under the command of Captain Johnson she left Simon's Town at 17h00 after taking 120 bales of cotton onboard from another ship that had floundered. The final delivery point for the cotton was Cape Town. At 18h45 she rounded Cape Point and soon afterwards struck the submerged rock at a speed of nine knots. Water immediately flooded the engine-room and Captain Johnson put the helm hard to port in an attempt to beach her. The crew and captain then abandoned ship and boarded a dingy. Within minutes the Albatross careened over, and it took less than 12 minutes after striking before she sank beneath the waves.

It took them 5 hours to row to shore and they landed at 01h00 in Hout Bay. They awoke some local fishermen who gave them coffee and shelter until they proceeded on foot to Cape Town. They arrived there that evening at 19h00.
